ANIMAL MEDICINES INSPECTORATE
The Animal Medicines Inspectorate (AMI) transferred from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) on 1st January 2006 and became part of the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). As a result of the Veterinary Medicines Regulations 2005 coming into force, the RPSGB’s statutory obligations in relation to animal medicines under the Medicines Act have been removed. This presented an opportunity to preserve the skills and expertise of the AMI and to position the organisation within the VMD for the benefit of both organisations. The five Inspectors will continue to operate regionally with an administrative office based in Stoneleigh. The move of the AMI reinforces the core strategic aims of the VMD and provides improvements to the coordination and scope of our enforcement activities. AMI Inspectors are authorised under the current Veterinary Medicines Regulations and their main role is to inspect and approve manufacturers and distributors of feedingstuffs containing veterinary medicinal products and/or specified feed additives and retailers of veterinary medicinal products by suitably qualified persons (SQPs).
