GOAT PRODUCTS: SITUATION IN EUROPE

The VMD recognises that there is an availability issue regarding authorised veterinary medicines for goats in the UK. In order to better understand the situation throughout Europe, Member States were asked to provide information relating to veterinary medicinal products which they have authorised for the treatment of goats. Returns were received from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and UK.

To see a complete list of all returns please follow this link.

Whilst information from Germany was provided indicating more than 130 products are authorised for use in goats only the information of biological products is presented. This is because the information on pharmaceutical products is extensive, in German and not available in a format that is easy to follow.

It was pleasing to see that across the Community a good number of products are authorised for the treatment of goats. Given the numbers authorised in some Member States it was not possible for all returns to be provided in English. Also in some cases links have been added to take you to an underlying file or directly to a website.

Although the information is not presented in a uniform format and as previously mentioned not all in English, it does give an indication as to the types and numbers of products authorised and where. As this information could be useful to veterinary surgeons and others, it was thought that publication in this format would nevertheless be useful.

This information was collated between month February and month June 2010. Since this time some products may have been varied, removed from the market or new products authorised. For information on the current situation please refer to the individual member states. In particular information on withdrawal periods must be taken from the current product literature.

If you are a Veterinary Surgeon and wish to import one of the listed veterinary medicines into the UK you will need a Special Import Certificate. Please refer to Veterinary medicines Guidance Note Number 7  for information on how to apply.
