DOWNLOADS VetCalc DownloadVetCalc is a software simulation tool that calculates the predicted environmental concentration (PEC) of veterinary medicines in the aquatic environment. The software can calculate PEC values based on the spreading of manure from animals treated with veterinary medicines while in housing and based on direct excretion from animals treated while on pasture. VetCalc contains 12 scenarios representing a range of different climatic conditions, soil types, farm animal species and animal production systems. VetCalc has replaced the earlier modelling programme VetPec which is no longer available. The model is intended for use by those who are involved in preparation of the ecotoxicology section of Part III of a Marketing Authorisation application dossier. It is also intended for use by assessors within competent authorities responsible for the assessment of environmental safety data. The model is designed specifically for use when preparing a Phase II environmental risk assessment. VetCalc is not suitable to be used for Phase I assessments and should not be used. An extensive user manual, which is also the final project report, can be accessed via the main start-up screen under the “view” option. The development of VetCalc was funded by Defra as part of the VMD’s R&D programme. The contract (Project number VM02133) was awarded to Dr Neil Mackay of Cambridge Environmental Assessments. The model was developed by Dr Mackay and his colleagues Dr Paul Mason of CEA and Dr Antonio DiGuardo (University of Insubria, Italy). VetCalc runs on Windows 98 / 2000 / XP. The installation requires about 25 MB of hard disk space, with a further 50 MB required to run the software. To download VetCalc click on the link below and follow the on-screen prompts. VetCalc has been designed to use a “.” symbol as the decimal separator and not “,” as is usual in Europe. If, when running the software for the first time, the programme crashes when the soil model reaches 14-15%, you will need to change the regional settings of your system from their local setting to English (UK). This change will mean the decimal separator is “.” and the programme will run. A new version of VetCalc v1.4 was produced in August 2006. This version corrects some of the bugs identified in the earlier version. A list of the changes made to the programme is given in the file Changes included in VetCalc v1.4.pdf A second update of VetCalc was carried out in February 2007. This version (v1.5) corrects an error in the previous versions which resulted in VetCalc overestimating the PEC in soil for animal types for which the number of production cycles per year was greater than 1, but the storage time of the manure was less than one year. The calculation of the PEC in soil is now based on the number of animal cycles which will occur during the storage period of the manure.
